Life Skills & Learning

Adulting Academy

Growing into adulthood involves more than knowledge — it requires practical skills, confidence, and the ability to navigate everyday situations independently.
Adulting Academy is a structured life-skills program designed to help participants build the practical abilities needed for independent living. The program bridges the gap between youth and adulthood by combining real-world learning with hands-on practice in a supportive group environment.
Rather than relying solely on classroom-style teaching, sessions focus on experiential learning, where participants actively practice skills they will use in everyday life. This approach helps turn knowledge into real confidence.
Participants work through a range of life skills including financial literacy, social interaction, employment readiness, travel skills, routines, and household responsibilities. The goal is not simply to teach information, but to help individuals apply these skills in real-world settings.
Adulting Academy provides a supportive environment where participants can learn, ask questions, and develop independence alongside peers who share similar goals.

Learning Pillars

Independent Living Skills

Participants develop practical skills required for everyday independence.

This includes learning how to manage a household, organise living spaces, handle laundry and cleaning responsibilities, and structure weekly routines. The program focuses on building the confidence needed to manage everyday responsibilities and maintain a balanced lifestyle.

Financial Literacy

Understanding money is a key step toward independence.

Participants learn the fundamentals of budgeting, saving, managing expenses, and recognising impulse spending. The goal is to build simple and sustainable financial habits that allow participants to manage their finances with greater confidence and stability.

Social Skills & Relationships

Adult life requires navigating a wide variety of social environments.

This part of the program focuses on communication skills, social etiquette, building friendships, and understanding healthy relationships. Participants explore how to interact respectfully in different settings and practice social skills in supportive, real-world scenarios.

Navigating the Community

Confidence in the community is an important part of independence.

Participants learn practical skills such as using public transport, understanding routes and maps, and travelling safely. These lessons help individuals move through their community with greater independence and confidence.

Employment Readiness

For many participants, gaining employment is an important long-term goal.

Adulting Academy introduces the foundations of entering the workforce, including job searching, writing resumes, preparing for interviews, and understanding workplace expectations. Participants also learn how to communicate effectively in professional settings and manage workplace challenges.

Capacity Building Through Practice

The program emphasises practical application rather than theory alone.

Participants have opportunities to apply what they learn through guided activities, community experiences, and structured practice. These experiences help reinforce skills and build the confidence needed to use them in everyday life.

Additional mentoring can also support participants to implement these skills at home, helping bridge the gap between learning and real-world application.
