Program Framework: Tiered Café Participation at Willy’s
Willy’s Café operates on a tiered participation model designed to meet people where they’re at, while supporting skill development, confidence, and meaningful engagement over time. Participants are not placed into fixed roles; instead, they move fluidly between tiers based on interest, capacity, energy, and personal goals. The program prioritises choice, flexibility, and real-world experience within a supportive environment.
Tier 1 – High Engagement
Tier 1 is suited to participants who are motivated to engage in employment-style responsibilities and are working toward greater independence and workplace readiness. Participants at this level are generally able to sustain longer café shifts and enjoy having routine, structure, and clear responsibilities. The focus is on building transferable workplace skills such as time management, communication, customer service, and task completion.
Participants in Tier 1 work in the café and focus on core café operations and routines. This may include front-of-house service, taking customer orders, preparing and serving food and drinks, cleaning and maintaining café areas, and participating in promotional activities such as distributing flyers, engaging with local businesses, or contributing to social media content. Support is present but increasingly hands-off, allowing participants to develop confidence and autonomy in a real café environment.
Tier 2 – Moderate / Flexible Engagement
Tier 2 is designed for participants who are interested in café work but benefit from more flexibility, shorter blocks of engagement, or shared responsibilities. These participants often enjoy combining skill-building with variety and breaks, and may be developing confidence or capacity over time. This tier supports gradual progression without the pressure of full shifts.
Participants in Tier 2 typically work in the café in structured blocks rather than full shifts and may step in and out of other programs throughout the day. Activities include assisted café work, basic food preparation, customer interaction with guidance, cleaning and stocking, and general service tasks. Participants may also take part in our other programs such as Adulting Academy as well as optional Creative Projects or social activities. Hours are flexible and can be adjusted based on energy levels and personal goals.
Tier 3 – Exploratory / Short-Form Engagement
Tier 3 is suited to participants who are interested in experiencing the café environment in shorter periods or who benefit from high levels of support and variety. The focus at this level is on participation, exploration, and enjoyment rather than productivity or output. It is ideal for participants who enjoy trying new activities, engaging socially, or building familiarity with community settings.
Participants in Tier 3 engage in light café tasks for shorter periods, such as sweeping, wiping tables, watering plants, or observing and assisting with food and drink preparation. Sessions are typically broken up with regular breaks and may be combined with group programs such as Creative Projects, D&D, Movie Nights, or other social activities. Support is provided throughout, and participation is flexible, allowing individuals to move between activities without pressure.
